Questions To Ask The Neurosurgeon And/Or Plastic Surgeon During Consult
 
  • Number of CS Surgeries that they have performed?
  • Success rate?
  • Can they provide the phone # of other parents/references who they have performed the same or similar surgery on?
  • Preferred age at the time of surgery?
  • Predicted length of surgery?
  • Prediction of future surgeries needed for your child?
  • Details of surgery to be performed? (strip/remodel, etc.)
  • Recovery time expectation?
  • Anticipated length of hospital stay?
  • Metal or absorb able plates (if needed)?
  • Staples or absorbable stitches?
  • Recommended units of blood for transfusion?
  • Type of incision? (straight/zig-zag)
  • Will they shave the head?
  • Frequency of follow-up visits?
  • Recommended genetic testing?
  • Anticipated deformity, problems or concerns if surgery is not done?
  • Recommended other specialists? (ENT, Ophthalmologists, etc.)
  • When will the surgery date be set?
  • Is one or more people permitted to stay with the baby, 24 hours per day?
  • Is directed donation of blood allowed (can I donate blood for my baby's transfusion)?
  • What are the feeding instructions in the 24 hours leading up to the surgery?
  • How soon after surgery will I be able to see my baby?
  • What forms will I need to sign for the surgery and hospital stay?  Are they available to read in advance?
  • If breastfeeding, will the hospital have a pump available?  Does the hospital have any policies regarding nursing while in ICU?
  • What do I need to watch out for following the surgery?  Any special precautions?
  • What are your procedures regarding the use of cranial orthosis (ex. DOC Band) for treatment following surgery?
  • What should I bring to the hospital?
