Dr. Yamini earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University in 1990 and completed his MD at the University of Michigan in 1995. Dr. Yamini did his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of Chicago from 1996 to 2001. He served as chief resident during his final year of training. Dr. Yamini is currently a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Yamini is an active medical researcher. His current investigations explore cellular DNA damage response and the treatment of malignant brain tumors in children and adults. Additionally, Dr. Yamini has interests in intracranial and skull-base endoscopy research. As an active scholar, he has published articles and book chapters on current research topics, including brain/spinal tumors and craniosynostosis. Dr. Yamini’s research has been funded by organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Cancer Society, and the University of Chicago Cancer Center.
Dr. Yamini is also a member of the following professional organizations: American Association of Cancer Research, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association, Chicago Surgical Society, Child Neurology Society, and Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Society for Neurooncology. He is also a faculty advisor for the University of Alabama/University of Chicago Brain Tumor Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE).
Bakhtiar Yamini, MD, specializes in neuro-oncology and he is an expert in minimally invasive neurosurgery for children and adults. He is well-versed in using sophisticated stereotactic techniques that allow for three-dimensional surgical planning. Dr. Yamini also has a strong interest in vascular neurosurgery and spine surgery, as well as in treating craniofacial anomalies, including craniosynostosis.
