Nicholas M. Wetjen, MD joined The Iowa Clinic after directing Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for nearly ten years. He chose The Iowa Clinic because of the talented team of surgeons who provide exceptional neurosurgical care right here in his home state of Iowa.
His interest in neurosurgery began before medical school, in his undergraduate studies in developmental neurobiology at Loras College in Dubuque. He instantly became fascinated with the complexity and design of the nervous system. Dr. Wetjen brings his expertise and passion for pediatric neurosurgery here to Iowa, and fulfills a medical need, by becoming one of a handful of pediatric neurosurgeons in the state. The physician relationships he built within the Iowa pediatric medical community from his work at Mayo Clinic, continues. He is making a difference in the lives of our younger patients in need of neurological care, but his expertise doesn’t stop there.
Dr. Wetjen is an integral part of our already exceptional adult neurological surgery team and will specialize in pediatrics but also focus on minimally invasive spine as well as brain, epilepsy, and vascular surgeries in adults.
Outside of work, Dr. Wetjen has many interests, which include spending time with his children, as well as aviation (he’s a private pilot), hunting, fishing, camping, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts, mountain biking, skiing, scuba diving, and competitive shooting.
