Team Role: Ear, nose and throat surgeon. Performs cleft lip/palate repair, ear tubes, speech surgery, sleep surgery, nasal surgery, jaw lengthening surgery, tonsil removal and bone grafting surgery.
James Phillips, M.D., received his undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then completed a clinical fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Following Arkansas, Phillips joined Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt as an assistant professor. He has completed courses in contemporary management of aerodigestive disease, pediatric reconstructive surgery and a workshop in nasoalveolar molding.
Phillips is a specialist in pediatric otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery. His areas of clinical interest include cleft lip and palate, hemangiomas, vascular anomalies and general pediatric otolaryngology. Phillips is the clinical director of the Pediatric Vascular Anomalies team and the Multidisciplinary Clinic.
Phillips is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. He also is involved with mission work related to cleft palate repair in Guatemala, Haiti and Mexico.
