This is Aspen, she was born on February 23, 2013. She is my first child- and will be an only child for a long time considered I am a single mom. It was a long delivery that ended up in c-section for failure to descend, however after way too many hours of labor she was here. She is very coned head, but the doctors said that it was normal and would go down on its own. At two days old we felt a ridge where here second soft spot should have been.
When I felt this I knew something wasn’t right. We took her to the pediatrician, however I forgot to ask (sleep depravation). So when Aspen was 2 weeks old I made an appointment specifically for her head with the pediatrician. The pediatrician said that her head shape was abnormal and said her futures could have closed and was going to send over a referral. After a week of waiting, a referral was sent to Duke.
At just over a month old, we went to our first appointments with Dr. Marcus and Dr. Grant, and was immediately diagnosed with Sagittal Craniosynostosis. Surgery was scheduled that day for a month out. At 2 1/2 months old- Aspen underwent the endoscopic cranio repair. She did very well with surgery- and her head shape was significantly different with surgery alone. On May 31st we started helmet therapy- and the plan is to get the helmet off by December. I am very thankful for her doctors and the support I had through this scary time.
